charges of pretension

recently, i showed a good friend someone else's blog and got a pretty negative impression. keep in mind, i really do trust this good friend's opinion and to a certain extent, it reaffirmed my own impressions.

the charge levelled at this particular blog was that it was pretentious, and excessively so. the thing is that, if blogs are supposed to reflect people or at least some part of them, then i suppose it revealed to me and friend that said person was excessively pretentious or showoffish. i guess everyone has a bit of pretense going on; you always pretend to be someone you want the world to see you as. but for said blogger, it was excessive even to someone who doesn't know him/her. using the word showoff seems a bit wrong tho; i don't think blogger's intent was to demonstrate superiority in a particular skill or anything. or perhaps i just don't really see any outstanding qualities about said blogger. but yes let's go back to the word pretension.

the problem is that many (i think 4 or 5) years ago, i had the same charge levelled at me because someone said my blog was pretentious. at that point of time, i barely wrote any opinions and often wrote stuff like what songs i was listening to, which boy of the month i was obsessed about. think i was still mad about usher at that point of time.. gee. oh and i narrated my day in teenagegirl fashion so it was all very innocent. so i was very hurt and very shocked because i honestly had no idea it came across that way. so i did the natural teenagegirl thing and asked a couple more people, and those people disagreed with the first opinion. eventually me and friends concluded that the pretension charge levelled against me was merely the surface of deeper problems between me and accuser (don't know what else to call friend) and indeed it was the precursor to more events to come.

so i'm not sure whether my thinking that that particular blog is pretentious is symptomatic of something deeper and darker. then what about my friend who had the same impression? maybe it was just a coincidence.. but i definitely did not influence her.

okay two essays down this week. one more to go and then i can finally begin mugging.
